Calcium hardness in water comes out of solution when heated. It is called inverse solubility. Instead of being more soluble at higher temperatures, like table salt, calcium will precipitate out as white scale. It is the old tea pot scale story. When there is iron in the water it makes things look worse because it stains the more predominate calcium build up.
