The question is, will hard water reduce the efficiency of a tankless water heater?

Many people believe that hard water doesn’t adversely affect a tankless water heater because it doesn’t store water. This is not the case.

Depending on the brand, a tankless water heater will have either a heating element or a heat exchanger. Any hard water buildup on the heating element or heat exchanger will cause the water heater to work harder. Think about how much harder your stove would have to work heating a pot of water if you put stones under the pot.

This why most tankless water heater manufacturers would prefer water greater than 3 grains per gallon (51 ppm) be softened before entering the water heater.
